Whelley is a residential area just outside Wigan town centre, easily reached via the A49 from M6 Junction 25. The A577 provides local connections to New Springs and Rose Bridge. Most journeys are short local trips, though the M58 motorway 8km north links to Liverpool and Manchester. The area sits on former coalfield land where three old colliery sites have been converted into community green spaces.
