Vatisker forms part of the Back settlement on Lewis's eastern coast, about 10km from Stornoway via the A857. Most visitors arrive by ferry from Ullapool then drive north through typical Hebridean moorland. The Atlantic climate means frequent rain and strong winds, with summer temperatures rarely above 15°C. The village retains traditional white croft houses scattered across machair grassland, many still worked by Gaelic-speaking families.
