Tinwald lies along the A701 in Dumfries and Galloway, five kilometres north of Dumfries town center. The village serves as a convenient stop on the main Edinburgh-Dumfries route, with good access to both the M74 and A75. Burns enthusiasts know it as the gateway to Ellisland Farm, where Robert Burns penned "Tam o' Shanter" whilst farming the land across the Nith.
