Tarland lies in Royal Deeside's Howe of Cromar valley, roughly 40 kilometres west of Aberdeen via the A944 through Alford. Alternative routes include the A93 to Aboyne then B9119 north, popular with tourists heading to the Cairngorms. The village has about 10 EV charging points and centres on an 18th-century mercat cross.
