Stranraer sits at Loch Ryan's head in Dumfries and Galloway, serving as the peninsula's main town and former ferry hub to Northern Ireland. The A77 connects north to Glasgow (130km) whilst the A75 links east to the M74 via Dumfries. Most visitors arrive on these routes before continuing to Cairnryan's active ferry terminals or exploring the Rhins peninsula. The old Stena Line terminal building remains a prominent reminder of when Stranraer itself was Scotland's primary Belfast gateway.
