Steinis lies just outside Stornoway on Lewis's eastern coast, easily reached via local roads from the A857. Most visitors arrive through Stornoway Airport, about 5km away, or the ferry terminal in town. The area offers typical Hebridean moorland scenery with coastal views across the Minch. The settlement's name derives from the Norse "steinn," reflecting the characteristically rocky shoreline.
