Southowram occupies a hillside position in the Calder Valley between Halifax and Brighouse. The A629 provides the main access from Halifax, whilst the nearby A58 connects to Bradford and Leeds. The M62 lies about 10 kilometres south for longer journeys. The village retains its 1878 Methodist Church with its distinctive spire overlooking the valley.
