Smoky Hole is a tiny Surrey Hills settlement between Peaslake and Hoe, reached via the A3 and A25 from London or through Shere from Guildford. The narrow lanes wind through ancient woodland in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The curious name comes from a 19th-century lime kiln that burned continuously, creating a smoky haze visible across the countryside.
