Smithybridge lies in the Pennine foothills between Rochdale and Littleborough, connected by the A58 which continues east through Yorkshire toward Halifax. The M62 junction at Milnrow provides motorway access, whilst Smithy Bridge station offers rail links to Manchester and Leeds. The village gets its name from the old packhorse bridge that once carried salt traders across the River Roch.
