Smerlie lies in Scotland's far north, reached via the A99 coastal road that connects Wick to John o' Groats. Most visitors arrive on the North Coast 500 route, whilst locals use short hops to nearby Lybster and Upper Lybster. The village sits amongst Caithness's characteristic flat moorland, just inland from dramatic North Sea cliffs. You'll find the remains of 19th-century herring fishing steps carved into the rocks at nearby Upper Lybster.
