Shinrone sits in County Offaly along the R421, about 8 kilometres from Birr and 15 from Roscrea. From Dublin, take the M7 to Junction 23, then the R445 through Birr. The town serves as a handy base for exploring the midlands, with Kinnitty 12 kilometres northeast. Most traffic consists of local commuters between Offaly towns. The nearby Birr Golf Course, operating since the 1890s, features fairways carved from the original Birr Castle demesne with mature trees lining the holes.
