Ryhope lies on Sunderland's southeastern fringe, a former pit village turned residential area between the city centre and coast. The A19 provides the main link north to Newcastle and south to Teesside, whilst the A1018 connects directly into Sunderland. The village retains its Victorian railway viaduct, where the East Coast Main Line creates a dramatic stone archway over the main street.
