Ryal is a small Northumberland village about 20km northwest of Newcastle, reached via the A696 from the A1. Local roads connect it to Matfen and Ingoe, whilst the scenic Military Road runs nearby following Hadrian's Wall. The surrounding countryside features typical northern pastoral landscape with stone walls and green fields. The village sits close to Cilurnum, where impressive Roman fort remains and ancient baths survive beside the River North Tyne.
