The journey from the Scottish mainland involves ferries from Scrabster to Stromness, then onward island-hopping services. Local roads connect nearby settlements like Northwall and Sellibister within a few kilometres, whilst longer trips to Kirkwall require careful ferry timetable planning. The island hosts one of several small airstrips that keep these isolated communities connected to mainland Scotland.
