Redmire sits in Wensleydale's heart, reached via the A684 from Leyburn then local roads. Longer routes typically come through Scotch Corner and the A6108, or from the west via Settle and Hawes. The village clusters around Bolton Castle, the 14th-century fortress where Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner for six months in 1568-69.
