Rainton Bridge lies between Sunderland and Houghton-le-Spring in County Durham, easily reached via the A690 Durham Road or from the A19 trunk road. The former mining settlement sits amid rolling countryside typical of the old coalfields, with good connections to Newcastle and Durham city. The preserved Art Deco pithead baths building, now housing an auto parts business, remains the area's most striking architectural feature.
