Pontefract lies between Leeds and Sheffield in West Yorkshire, easily reached via Junction 32 of the M62. The A639 connects it directly to both cities, whilst the nearby A1(M) serves long-distance traffic. Regular trains run to London and Manchester from the town centre station. The ruined castle where Richard II died in 1400 dominates the skyline above the market square.
