Polton lies in the Midlothian countryside just south of Edinburgh, easily reached via the A7 through Newington or the A720 bypass via Sheriffhall Roundabout. This former gunpowder manufacturing village sits along the River North Esk, surrounded by wooded valleys. The historic mills, established in the 1790s, once used the river's power to produce munitions for Britain.
