Painswick perches on a Cotswolds hillside, 8 miles from Stroud via the A4173. Most visitors arrive from the M5 at Junction 12, then through Quedgeley on the B4073. The honey-stone market town serves as a gateway to scenic valley routes toward Slad and Sheepscombe. The historic churchyard famously contains exactly 99 yew trees, as local legend insists the devil prevents a hundredth from surviving.
