Overbister lies on Sanday, one of Orkney's northern isles, reached by ferry from Kirkwall then the B9069 northward from Loth pier. The settlement sits along the island's eastern shore where farmland meets the North Sea. Sanday Airport offers an alternative to ferry travel, though most visitors connect through Kirkwall. The island stretches over 20 miles long but averages less than 2 miles wide, creating an unusually elongated finger shape pointing into the North Sea.
