Old Durham lies just north of Durham city centre, easily reached via Junction 62 of the A1(M) and the A690. The A167 Great North Road also passes through, connecting to Newcastle and the wider region. Long-distance visitors typically use the A1(M) corridor, whilst locals rely on the A690 and A167 for daily commuting to surrounding towns and former mining villages. The area's defining landmark remains Durham Cathedral's twin Norman towers, which have commanded this strategic position above the River Wear since 1093.
