Mullingar sits in County Westmeath, 80 kilometres west of Dublin on the N4, making it a handy base for exploring Ireland's midlands. The town connects well to other regions via the N52, with Lough Ennell and Lough Owel providing decent fishing and boating nearby. The Royal Canal runs through town on its way from Dublin to the Shannon. About 5 kilometres south, Belvedere House features an unusual Gothic folly called the Jealous Wall, built by a spiteful landlord to block his view of his brother's superior mansion next door.
