Mountnugent is a small market town on Lough Sheelin's shores in County Cavan, about 15 kilometres south of Cavan town. The most direct route from Dublin takes 90 minutes via the M3 to Kells, then the R154 northwest through Virginia. From Cavan town, it's a straightforward 20-minute drive south on the R198 through farmland. The town is popular with anglers who come for Lough Sheelin's famous brown trout, which grow to exceptional sizes thanks to the lake's limestone-rich waters and spring mayfly hatches.
