Melsetter sits on Hoy, Orkney's second-largest island, accessible via ferry from Houton on the Mainland to Lyness, then a short drive south on the B9047. The settlement occupies dramatic clifftop terrain where the North Sea meets the Pentland Firth. The Hoy Heritage Centre here displays fascinating wartime artifacts from when Scapa Flow served as the Royal Navy's main base, including relics from the German fleet scuttled in 1919.
