Mail lies along Shetland's main A970 road, roughly 15 kilometres north of Lerwick. This puts you at the heart of Mainland's transport network, with easy access to scattered communities via single-track roads branching off the main route. The area serves as a useful base for exploring central Shetland's crofting landscape and archaeological sites. The underlying bedrock here consists of some of Scotland's oldest metamorphic rocks, dating back over 400 million years.
