Lumphanan lies along the A980 in Royal Deeside, about 40 kilometers west of Aberdeen. Most visitors arrive via the A93 from Aberdeen, turning north at Banchory, whilst those from Ballater take the A980 south from Alford. Lumphanan is traditionally regarded as the site where Macbeth met his end in 1057, marked by the ancient Peel Ring stone circle.
