Lonton lies in upper Teesdale where the Pennines begin to rise, connected via the A67 to Darlington and the A1(M) eastward, or Brough westward across the fells. Local routes serve nearby villages like Mickleton and Laithkirk within a few kilometres. The limestone river valley here carved the distinctive pale stone that built every traditional wall and barn in sight.
