Listowel sits on the River Feale in North Kerry, 28 kilometers northeast of Tralee via the N69. This market town of 4,800 has produced an extraordinary number of writers, including John B. Keane and Bryan MacMahon, with the annual Writers' Week festival in late May drawing visitors from across Ireland. The town center features a restored 15th-century castle and traditional pubs around the main square. The N69 runs through town, connecting to Tralee, Cork via N21, and the Shannon ferry at Tarbert. The Garden of Europe in the town park displays stones from every EU country, each inscribed with text from that nation's writers.
