Lechlade marks the highest navigable point on the Thames, where the river meets the Coln in Gloucestershire. The A361 connects north to Burford and the A40, while south leads to Swindon and the M4. The A417 heads east toward Faringdon and Oxford. St. Lawrence Church inspired Shelley's 1815 poem "A Summer Evening Churchyard."
