Hurst forms part of Tameside in Greater Manchester's eastern suburbs, easily reached via Junction 23 of the M60 then the A635 towards Ashton-under-Lyne. Local drivers often use the A662 from Manchester city centre, whilst long-distance visitors typically connect via the M62 or M6 to the M60 orbital. The name derives from the Old English "hyrst," meaning wooded hill.
