Howlish is a small County Durham city on the A688, just north of Bishop Auckland and a kilometre from Coundon. The A1(M) lies 15km east for longer journeys to Newcastle or Durham city. Electric vehicle drivers have access to roughly 100 fast charging points in the area. The preserved Pithead Baths building, now an auto parts shop, still displays its original colliery entrance wall and railings.
