Howdon occupies the north bank of the Tyne in North Tyneside, transformed from its shipbuilding past into a residential area. The A187 Coast Road runs straight through, linking Newcastle centre 6km west with the coast, whilst the A19 Tyne Tunnel connects south to Jarrow and the A1. Electric vehicle drivers will find over 400 fast chargers across North Tyneside. The Victorian pedestrian and cyclist tunnels beneath the Tyne still operate their original wooden escalators from 1951.
