Housay lies on Whalsay, one of Shetland's inhabited islands reached by ferry from Laxo on the mainland. The A970 and B9071 connect to the ferry terminal, with crossings taking 30 minutes to Symbister. Weather can disrupt services, particularly in winter when Atlantic gales are frequent. The island's single main road links scattered communities, with most journeys under 10 kilometres. Whalsay Airstrip operates with a grass runway mainly for emergency services.
