Hetton Downs lies between Sunderland and Houghton-le-Spring in Tyne and Wear's former coalfield. The A690 provides the main route into Sunderland city centre, whilst the A19 trunk road sits 8 miles west for longer journeys to Newcastle or Teesside. Most journeys are local commuter trips, though the area attracts visitors exploring the region's mining heritage.
