Gunnerside is a small Dales village in upper Swaledale, reached via the B6270 from Reeth or over the Buttertubs Pass from Hawes. The stone-built settlement sits above the River Swale, surrounded by traditional barns and dry stone walls typical of this remote Yorkshire valley. Lead mining ruins dot the surrounding fells, with the distinctive stone arches of Old Gang smelt mill chimneys still standing prominently on the hillside above the village.
