Grunasound lies on West Burra in Shetland's southern islands, reached via the A970 and B9074 across the connecting bridges from the mainland. It's about 20 minutes from Lerwick, making it a straightforward drive for locals, whilst long-distance visitors typically arrive via ferry or Sumburgh Airport. The settlement overlooks Grunasound Voe in classic Shetland fashion, with its name deriving from Old Norse meaning "shallow water."
