Gilfoot lies in East Ayrshire's former mill country, reached via the A719 through Galston or local roads from Newmilns. The area retains its agricultural character amongst rolling countryside, with Glasgow Prestwick Airport 25km southwest. The Victorian railway viaduct's stone arches still span the valley, marking where trains once served the Irvine Valley's textile towns.
