Downpatrick, County Down's historic market town, lies 30km south of Belfast via the A7 through Saintfield. The A25 from Newry provides the main western approach, whilst the A22 connects eastward to Strangford and the Ards Peninsula. Local routes serve Struell Wells and the Lecale Peninsula's fishing villages. Saint Patrick's Cathedral houses the granite stone marking Ireland's patron saint's reputed burial site.
