Dounreay
Scotland
Scotland
Dounreay lies on Caithness's remote north coast, about 12km west of Thurso via the A99. Known primarily for its nuclear research facility, this exposed coastal spot experiences typical Highland maritime weather with persistent Atlantic winds. Long-distance visitors follow the A9 north through the Highlands, whilst locals use shorter routes from Reay and surrounding villages. The distinctive spherical Fast Reactor building remains visible for miles along the coast road.
