Cuilfail forms part of Lewes on the edge of the South Downs, connected by the A27 corridor linking Brighton and Eastbourne. The A23 from London via the M23 provides the main long-distance approach, whilst local traffic uses the A275 and various downland routes. The settlement overlooks the distinctive Ouse Valley gap where the river cuts through the chalk hills toward Newhaven.
