Cricklade lies in north Wiltshire just off the A419, positioned where the Thames first becomes navigable amongst chalk downs and water meadows. The A419 connects directly to the M4 at Swindon, making it easily accessible from London via junction 15. Local routes include the A4311 from Wootton Bassett and smaller roads from Purton and Latton. The town claims the distinction of being England's first town on the Thames, marked by a stone monument near the old bridge.
