Most visitors arrive from the A1 through Leyburn (45km) or the M6 via Sedbergh (35km), though the final approach involves narrow roads with passing places. The valley's elevated position means harsh winters and frequent rain, whilst roughly 5 EV charging points serve the area around Hawes. Ancient dry stone walls climb the impossibly steep fellsides in an intricate geometric pattern.
