Copister lies on Yell, Shetland's second-largest island, reached by ferry from Toft on the mainland via the A970. The settlement sits amongst typical Shetland moorland, with narrow local roads connecting to Ulsta (2km) and other island communities. The name derives from Old Norse, meaning "hill pasture."
