Cooling lies on the Hoo Peninsula in north Kent, reached via the A228 from Rochester and the M2. This quiet village sits amongst Thames marshes and inspired Dickens' Great Expectations opening scene. The medieval St James Church, where young Pip met Magwitch in the novel, still overlooks the atmospheric marshland graveyard that captured the author's imagination.
