Challister lies on Whalsay, reached by a 20-minute ferry from Laxo on the Shetland Mainland. Most visitors arrive as part of island-hopping tours, with local roads connecting the scattered communities within a few kilometres. The island maintains a small grass airstrip that serves as an emergency transport link when rough seas disrupt the regular ferry service.
