Catfirth lies in central Shetland along the shores of Catfirth Voe, about 15 kilometres north of Lerwick via the A970 and B9075. The settlement connects to nearby communities through short local routes, whilst Lerwick/Tingwall Airport sits roughly 10 kilometres south. The name derives from Old Norse meaning "cat fjord," though why cats featured in this remote voe's naming remains unexplained.
