Cargo lies just north of Carlisle near the Scottish border, easily reached via the A7 from either direction. The village sits in the Eden Valley's gentle farmland, with the Lake District fells visible southward. Local routes include the A69 for coastal access and connections to Newcastle, whilst longer journeys use the nearby M74 to Glasgow. The Roman bath house at nearby Castlesteads still displays its original underfloor heating system.
