Caol Ila perches on Islay's northeastern shore, overlooking the narrow sound separating the island from Jura. Visitors arrive via CalMac ferry from Kennacraig to Port Askaig, then drive 2km along the A846. The settlement centres around its famous whisky distillery, established in 1846, which draws its water from Loch Nam Ban whilst enjoying commanding views across to Jura's distinctive Paps mountains.
