Bulwark occupies a quiet corner of rural Aberdeenshire, reached via the A950 from Aberdeen through Maud, about 50 kilometres north of the city. The village sits amongst typical Buchan farmland, close to Backhill of Clackriach and other scattered communities connected by country lanes. The name derives from the Scots for "rampart," suggesting ancient defensive earthworks once stood guard over this strategic spot in the agricultural heartland.
