Brearley occupies a hillside position in West Yorkshire's Calder Valley, reached via the A646 valley road that connects Halifax to Hebden Bridge. Most visitors arrive from Junction 24 of the M62, then follow the A629 and A646 through this former textile heartland. The village retains original three-storey weavers' cottages, built with oversized upper windows to illuminate the hand looms once housed within.
